Voter Registration Requirements

  • Poll workers over the age of 18 must either be registered voters in California or be lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the U.S. and otherwise eligible to register to vote except for their lack of U.S. citizenship.

  • Note: This voter registration requirement does not apply to poll workers under the age of 18.

Work Requirements

  • Minimum Age: 16-year-old students who are U.S. citizens or lawfully admitted for U.S. permanent residence.

  • You must complete training to be a poll worker.

  • Training Details: In-person and online training are both required. In-person training typically lasts 1 hour. Online training typically lasts 1 hour.

Bilingual individuals, particularly those who speak English and one of the following languages are encouraged to apply: Spanish, Mandarin, Hmong, Tagalog, Hindi, Korean, Vietnamese, or Japanese.

Individuals who are comfortable using computers and tablets are strongly encouraged to apply.

Completing a poll worker application does not guarantee placement. Actual polling place assignment is dependent on the needs of the polling place and its surrounding community. The county is always seeking workers with reliable transit and willingness to travel to any polling place within the county.

In addition to traditional poll workers, the county is also seeking for “depot workers” who help process election supplies during Election Night. Please contact the Contra Costa County Elections Office for more details on other volunteer opportunities.
